Spring Event: Educate. Inspire. Transform.

Rwanda Girls Initiatives friends and supporters gathered for a spectacular evening on March 13, 2010. We were thrilled and humbled by the generosity of those who attended – the event raised over $700,000 in support of the Gashora Girls Academy! A few highlights were the traditional Rwandan dancing and food, a beautiful atmosphere and powerful words spoken by Senator Inyumba from Rwanda. Senator Inyumba spoke movingly stating “if you educate a girl, you are in essence educating a nation”.

One of the most memorable moments of the evening was listening to Emilie Uwase, a fifteen year old student who is living in Tacoma on a full scholarship attending Annie Wright. She was darling and made two comments which really resonated with everyone. First, she told the crowd that although she attended one of the best schools in Rwanda, until coming to Annie Wright she had never seen a text book. It is hard to imagine, isn’t it?   Secondly, she commented on the fact that “while people come and donate malaria medicine to Rwanda, the malaria remains, but if you help to contribute towards education, that is what will help to change lives”. What wise words from a thoughtful young woman.

It is this message that continues to affirm that the work of the Rwanda Girls Initiative will enable the students who attend Gashora Girls Academy to become the leaders and change makers in their country who ultimately will create lasting change.
